Today, many agricultural fields near big cities use water from drains and drainage channels for irrigation. However, factories sometimes release chemical-contaminated wastewater into these drains. When this polluted water reaches the fields, it slowly reduces the quality of the soil and increases the amount of harmful chemicals in fruits, vegetables, and other crops. This directly affects farming, the environment, and people’s health.

To solve this problem, we have developed an Arduino and TDS Sensor based Smart Water Safety Valve System. Farmers can easily install this system in their irrigation pipe. When chemical-contaminated water or water with a high TDS level flows through the pipe, the TDS Sensor detects the water quality and sends a signal to the Arduino. The Arduino then controls a Servo Motor to immediately close the valve, preventing the polluted water from reaching the field. As soon as the water becomes clean and safe again, the valve automatically opens, allowing clean water to flow for irrigation.

The Arduino and TDS Sensor based Smart Water Safety Valve System is an innovative agriculture and water management project designed to protect farms from chemical-contaminated irrigation water. In many agricultural areas, especially fields located near cities and industrial zones, farmers often use water from drainage channels, canals, and wastewater sources for irrigation. When factory chemicals and polluted wastewater mix with irrigation water, the contamination slowly damages the soil, reduces crop quality, and increases harmful substances in vegetables, fruits, and other agricultural products.

This smart irrigation safety project provides an automatic solution for detecting unsafe water before it reaches the field. The system uses a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) Sensor to continuously monitor the quality of water flowing through the irrigation pipe. The sensor sends real-time water quality data to an Arduino Uno microcontroller. When the TDS level rises above the safe limit, indicating possible chemical contamination or poor-quality water, the Arduino instantly activates a Servo Motor controlled valve to stop the water flow automatically.

As soon as the water quality becomes safe again and the TDS level returns to the acceptable range, the Arduino reopens the valve and allows clean water to flow to the field. This fully automatic operation helps farmers use only safe irrigation water without continuous manual monitoring.

Working Principle

The TDS sensor is installed inside the irrigation pipeline where it continuously checks the dissolved solids present in the water. Under normal conditions, clean water has a lower TDS value and the valve remains open. If polluted or chemical-contaminated water enters the pipe, the TDS value increases beyond the preset threshold. The Arduino processes this data and rotates the servo motor to close the valve immediately. This prevents harmful water from entering the agricultural field. When clean water is restored, the valve opens automatically and irrigation resumes.
